Thursday Thoughts - It's time to win!

I am relatively new to the fantasy football scene. I have been an avid player for 3 years now. In my early days of fantasy games, I realized just how much more I cared about the outcome of a NFL game. Surprisingly, I couldn't believe just how much more I began rooting for my unfavorite players, unfavorite teams, and me, me, me. Sundays, Mondays, and occasionally Thursdays, I realized I was a bigger fan of the unpredictable, yet routinely satisfying game of professional football. That said, I have always tried to WIN!

I have learned firsthand that it takes luck, fun, and determination to be successful in your fantasy league. You hear it all that time that knowing more than your competition is key to drafting the best team, building depth during the waiver periods and making that tough start-vs.-sit decision. Many sites and sources do a fantastic job of helping us do this. Certainly, there is a plethora of information available at any time. Many experts and even businesses, make a living being right most of the time and being entertaining while doing it.  I just want to be right all the time (don't we all?) while enjoying myself doing it.   My philosophy for this blog is this, I want winners.. no, no, that was Mike Singletary's speech.

My mantra is this for those 960 minutes of the NFL regular season I seek to combine educated guesses, rational problem solving, stats, and gossip to help our fantasy teams win more often and have more fun trying. Now, let's win. Snap the ball. Here are the first 3 tips ever on this blog. Enjoy!

Key Update: BYE Weeks are coming. It's time to begin tentatively setting up your backups for success in the 6 weeks from wk 4 to wk 10. For most of us, our season will be decided (as well as post-season aspirations) in those weeks.

FF960 Tips for Week 3

Tip #1- if possible, aim to have the best waiver priority or auction dollars position during those weeks. More than usual, owners will storm the waiver wire for skill players and new found IDP studs during that time. Find the "next" big thing and be concerned with the one-hit wonders (OHW). OHW can either beat you or help your beat your opponent.

Tip #2 - know the weaknesses of your roster and know the weaknesses of others. By identifying owners in your league that have terrible holes to fill during the bye weeks, you'll identify soft match-ups, likely waiver grabs in your league, and who'll be down for trading or forced to release that 3rd "unproven" WR or RB that might get really hot in your fantasy playoffs. Conversely, it can be the complacent 1st place owner that snoozes on recent developments. Don't be that guy or gal!

Tip #3 - if you don't know how, learn how to win. Well, "how do you do that," you say? By understanding what it takes. Know your leagues scoring settings inside and out. Know when to play your consistent (rarely a dud) players and when to shoot for upside (when it'll take a miracle to win).  Always play your studs. I would argue that anyone you drafted in the first 3 rounds, or reached for (unless they're injured or on a bye), should stay plugged into your lineup. If you have an over-performing player, use data, intuition, and popular opinion to determine if it was a fluke or not. It's your team, do what you want to, but don't make your decisions in a vacuum and don't necessarily bench that OHW!

So long for now. Remember, Mike wants winners.

Good luck
